Commercial Driver’s License
- 1/20If applying for a C category license
You must be at least 21 years old: The minimum age for a Category C license is 21. You must already hold a valid Category B license and pass a medical examination.
If applying for a CE category license
You must hold a valid C license first: To apply for Category CE (truck + trailer), you must already hold a full C license and pass additional theory and practical exams.
If undergoing CPC training
You must complete 280 hours of initial training: The Initial Qualification (FIMO) consists of 280 hours of training, including theory and practical driving, for professional drivers.
If renewing your CPC certificate
You must take 35 hours of periodic training: Drivers must complete 35 hours of periodic CPC (FCO) training every 5 years to maintain commercial driving rights.
If driving professionally
You must carry a valid driver card: A digital tachograph driver card is mandatory for recording driving/rest periods in commercial operations across EU roads.
If failing the medical exam
You may not receive or renew your license: A valid medical certificate is required for all heavy vehicle categories. Failing this test disqualifies you from driving trucks.
If caught driving without a valid license
You will face heavy penalties: Driving a truck without a valid license in France can result in fines over €15,000 and possible imprisonment of up to 1 year.
If training at an approved center
It must be state-certified: All training (FIMO/FCO) must be completed at an officially approved centre. Unauthorized training is not recognized.
If changing from foreign to French license
You must exchange it under EU rules: EU licenses can be exchanged without exams. Non-EU drivers must provide translations and may be required to retake some tests.
If license is expired
You are not allowed to operate a truck: An expired license makes you ineligible to drive. Renewal must be done on time to avoid suspension and administrative penalties.
If you fail the practical driving exam
You must retake the test to qualify: Failing the driving test means you cannot receive the license. You must schedule a new exam and continue training if needed until you pass.
If you lose your license
You must report it and request a replacement: A lost or stolen truck license must be declared immediately. A replacement can be issued after verification of identity and driving history.
If your CPC expires
You are not allowed to drive professionally: Without a valid CPC, you’re not permitted to operate a truck in commercial service—even if your license itself is valid.
If transporting dangerous goods
You need ADR certification in addition to your license: ADR (Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route) is required for hauling hazardous materials.
If training under an apprenticeship program
You must meet both school and driving school standards: Apprentices must meet dual obligations: classroom instruction and accredited truck driving school training to qualify for a commercial license.
If caught exceeding driver hour limits
You may face penalties or suspension: Violating EU driving and rest time regulations can lead to fines, penalty points, or suspension of your driving card and license.
If renewing after long-term expiry
You may need to retake exams: If your truck license has expired for several years, the prefecture may require you to pass theory and/or practical tests again.
If applying for a D (bus) license later
C license training may be counted towards it: Some training modules from the Category C license (like CPC) can be credited if you pursue a bus license, reducing duplication.
If your training is incomplete
You cannot schedule the final exam: All hours in the FIMO or FCO training must be completed and validated before you’re eligible to take the final practical and theory exams.
If you are under probationary period
You must follow stricter rules and limits: Newly licensed truck drivers may face restrictions such as zero alcohol tolerance, limited trailer weights, and increased inspections during the first 3 years.
